The 3 stages of the classic NS RO water filter system are:

Stage 1: The water first enters a 5 micron pre-filter which filters out the sediment and particles to protect the RO membrane.

Stage 2: The large semi-permeable reverse osmosis membrane that efficiently remove dissolved solids such as iron ,lead, cadmium, and volatile chemicals such as chlorine and fluorine and their by-products.

The new and improved Nature’s Spring is a four-stage system that offers one unit for all city water systems and solid-block activated carbon in the pre- and post-filters. It also has a special timer with indicator lights so you know when to change the filters.

The four stages of the improved Nature’s Spring RO unit:

Stage One -Water first enters a 5-micron pre-filter that is 12 inches long. It removes any large sediment or debris that may damage the membrane.

R/O Pure water systems include a sediment pre-filter which keeps damaging particles and sediment from reaching the vital R/O semi-permeable membrane.  So why do we need another pre-filter?

1. The internal pre-filter cannot be either observed or cleaned if it becomes clogged with sediment and rust.

2. When work is done on the water mains in your area rust & debris may be shaken loose.

3. Area flooding sometimes over burdens city water plants & allows debris into the water system.

All of this is trapped by the pre-filter.  IF you have the Ozark Washable Pre-filter then you can simply wash it off and be back to making R/O pure water efficiently.  Otherwise you will need to send in your R/O pure water system for service.  Which is simpler?  Which is more cost-effective.  Putting it succinctly, our many years of experience with the Ozark prefilters has proven that this inexpensive protection has more than paid for itself by extending the life of reverse osmosis components. It just makes better sense to keep something clean, rather than replacing it so often.

The Ozark Washable Prefilter Assembly includes quick connect couplings to connect it between the faucet and the R/O pure water system.
There are 2 filter cartridges available.

1. P-5 white sediment cartridge for non-chlorinated water supply like a well. These may be rinsed several times and used until they are to dirty or flow rate is diminished or it takes longer to fill a jug of pure water. The Price is $4.00

2. C-2 Black carbon-sediment cartridge for chlorinated water supply.  This removes the chlorine and should be replaced every 3 months since they do become saturated with chlorine.  The price is $6.00
All cartridges should be rinsed off with a swift stream of cold water at least every two weeks to dislodge any sediment particles. The enclosed wrench makes this an easy task. It is well to remember that cartridges need regular rinsing even though they do not show evidence of large particles. The smaller particles (less than 30 microns) cannot be seen by the naked eye and yet the smaller particles are more of a hazard to the membrane and tend to plug the tiny openings more readily. All reverse osmosis units work by pressure. Plugged prefilters lower operating pressure which in turn lowers the efficiency of removal of the impurities in the water.

Pollution from industry, farming and human wastes all find their way into our water supply. Even though the U.S. politicians have set limits on the amount of contaminants allowed in our drinking water, we believe that these limits are too high. The inflammatory response is a normal process, and an important mechanism for health; without it, wounds and tissues would not heal. But as with most physiological functions, it is vital that there is a balance. Unfortunately, inflammation that becomes chronic is one of the most troublesome processes in the body.

Chronic inflammation causes significant disruption of the normal functions of cells and – unlike acute inflammation – is usually silent, invisible and persistent. We can’t see it or feel it, but it can cause a host of health-related problems that plague today’s society.

One of the reasons chronic inflammation is such a problem is that it appears to interfere with the ability of your adult stem cells – your body’s natural agents of renewal – to do their job. Scattered chronic inflammation at the cellular level makes it difficult for your stem cells to know where they are needed, because cells everywhere appear to be signaling them. Kind of like trying to hear someone in the middle of a stadium full of people who are all shouting at the same time.

Causes of chronic inflammation include the persistent presence of pathogens, environmental pollutants, negative genetic factors and lifestyle, among other things. While not all of these causes are within our control, some definitely are. Air purifiers can cut down on irritants in the air

It is quite possible invisible irritants inside the home may be causing any number of health problems.  Most of us can only relate air pollution with overcrowded highways and factories with smoke pluming from tall towers.  But the air you breathe inside your home may be much dirtier than the air found in the so-called great outdoors.  According to the EPA, indoor air may be up to five times dirtier than the “fresh” air found outside.  Any number of miniscule things may be found in the air of a typical home from dust to cigarette smoke.  These irritants can contribute to certain health problems such as a sore throat, stuffy nose, asthma and even stroke and heart disease.  An air purifier in the home can help alleviate some of these irritants. .

Air pollutants found in the home

In addition to cigarette smoke and house dust, there are many other irritants to be found in the home and it may seem like an impossible endeavor to remove them all but it can be done.  Pet dander, dust mites, pest excrement, such as from cockroaches, all contributes to air pollution in the home.  Mold in the bathroom and basement and nitrogen dioxide from gas stoves can also cause air problems. These irritants may cause itchy eyes, throat and nose. They may also be responsible for headaches, dizziness and fatigue.  An air purifier is one strategy for getting rid of these toxants while aiding the entire family to be healthier and feel better.

Strategies for getting rid of air pollutants in the home

• » Smoke – Simply ask people to smoke outside.  They are used to it and don‘t mind.  Also, use an air purifier for the home.
• » Dust and dander – Keep pets out of the bedroom and off of the bed. Vacuum and dust once or twice weekly. Use antiallergenic carpet cleaners since they also kill dust mites. Use hypoallergenic pillows and a mattress made with natural fabrics and synthetic fillers.  Zip both up in hypoallergenic covers to discourage pests from turning your bedroom into dust mite city. . Also, wash the mattress pads, sheets and comforters weekly in very hot water.
• » Nitrogen dioxide – To cut down on the irritants that wood-burning stoves, fireplaces and gas appliances emit, crack a window or run the kitchen exhaust fan.  Consider using only electric in your home.
• » Mold and Fungi – Keep mold at bay by washing bathroom surfaces and shower curtains weekly with 1 part bleach to 10 parts water.  Spread shower curtain out to dry and put towels in the washer immediately.

Dangerous levels of pollutants can build up if the house is poorly ventilated.  Try cracking a window in the morning or evening and using a well maintained air conditioner. Don’t forget to change the filters on the heating system regularly.

What size of air purifier is best?

You will place the air purifier in the room that you spend the most time in which is usually the bedroom where you sleep.  After you measure the room, check the clean air delivery rate seal on the back of the box.  This will define the number of cubic feet of air pulled through the device per minute.

HEPA filters as air purifiers

HEPA stands for high-efficiency particulate air.  These filters pull air through a thick fabric and traps unwanted particles.  As air purifiers, HEPA filters are 99.97 % effective according to the EPA.  Whole house HEPA filters are available but the EPA recommends using a stand alone unit. They are certainly less expensive and believed to not be any better than the stand alone units.  In addition, you can also purchase a HEPA filter for your vacuum cleaner.

What type of air purifier should you buy?

There are quite a few types of air purifiers on the market to select from and it can be quite confusing.  It good to compare the different types of air purifiers after determining your objective and budget.

• » Electronic air cleaners -  The American Lung Association recommends the models that electronically charge particles in the air and draw them to a metal plate or filter within the unit.  Choose full-size whole-room air filters. Tabletop models will not have enough power.
• » Hybrid filters -   A combination of the HEPA and electronic air purifier.
• » Gas phase filters -  They remove gases, vapors, and odors from the air but not particle pollutants such as dust.  These are often found in certain workplace settings where chemicals are found.
• » Ozone generator -  Their use is greatly discouraged by the EPA and the American Lung Association; ozone is a known lung irritant that can cause permanent damage.
• » Plants -  The experts at safety.com recommend investing in houseplants like Philodendron, Aloe Vera and Boston Fern to remove toxins from the air.  However the EPA warns that wet soil can pollute the air by adding mold to the atmosphere
• » Air sprays -  There’s no evidence that air purifying sprays do anything to reduce common pollutants. They may cause more irritation to your respiratory system. This includes candles, sprays and potpourri for sensitive individuals.

Whether an air purifier is being considered for the sick room or as a holistic preventative approach toward good health, almost all physicians agree that air purifiers do improve the quality of air within the home.  The American Heart Association offers a free guide for freshening the air you breathe in your home that may also be helpful.

Get the basics right, like eating a balanced diet, regular moderate exercise, rest and relaxation, fun and laughter, and life can be free of illness and poor health. Water consumption is one of these essential basics. If you want long-term good health, read on, we’re going to give you all the evidence you need to encourage you to drink water, as recommended by the experts: 6-8 large glasses a day!

Why you need a fresh daily supply

At any one time, between 55 and 75% of your body weight is water. Your body’s need for water is second only to it’s need for oxygen! Take a look at why you need so much of this life-giving liquid:

• » It assists the digestion, absorption and elimination of the food you eat
• » It assists the excretion of waste from your bowel and kidneys
• » It regulates your body temperature 24/7
• » It lubricates your joints and membranes
• » Blood is your body’s transport system, constantly distributing nutrients around the body – Your blood is made up of approximately 92% water
• » Body secretions and digestive juices are almost entirely water (your digestive system produces approximately 1.7 litres of saliva each day)

Because of these many important tasks, in normal conditions your body needs between 1 and a half to 2 litres of water daily, in order to function optimally. This daily amount is also affected by your size, diet, how active your lifestyle is and even the weather conditions!

The list below shows how your body loses water:

• » Through exhaling, perspiring and elimination (urine, faeces) your body lose 1.7 litres daily
• » In hot weather, perspiration increases so more water is needed to help regulate body temperature and keep you feeling cool
• » During cold weather, additional moisture is lost through breathing
• » For each hour of physical activity, you need and extra 1-3 glasses of water
• » Central heating has a drying effect, so you need to drink more, or turn down the heat

Here’s Something You May Not Know:
Water is a natural appetite suppressant. Lack of water can lead to over eating, this is because your brain doesn’t differentiate between hunger and thirst, so when you think you are feeling hungry, chances are, your body really needs water, so drink a large glass of water before you eat. In most cases, you will probably find this will satisfy what you thought were hunger pains.

Are you Dehydrated?
You can probably appreciate by now that many, many people are walking around in a constant state of dehydration! So is your body gasping for water? How would you know? You can check for yourself below – we’ve started with the most common symptoms, right through to the more severe symptoms:

• » Headaches - A major function of water is to flush toxins from the body. Your brain is 75% water, so even being slightly dehydrated can cause headaches.
• » Poor Concentration/Fatigue – If your body is overloaded with toxins and not enough water to flush them out, you will feel less energetic while your body struggles with the toxins.
• » Constipation – Water speeds the process of elimination adding bulk to the stool, so drinking adequate fluid assist the flow and regularity.
• » Reduced urine Output/Dark Urine – The kidneys filter waste products out of the blood. Amazingly, approximately 180 litres of water is recycled by the kidneys daily! This process relies on an adequate fresh supply, without it, output of urine is reduced, waste products become more concentrated, resulting in darker urine.
• » Furry tongue/bad breath – If not enough fluid is passing through the mouth to wash away food particles, bacteria builds up in the throat and mouth, and on the tongue as a white film of fur.
• » Dry Mouth – Saliva lubricates the mouth, dehydration reduces the amount available.

In More Severe Dehydration

• » Muscle Cramps – This happens when not enough oxygen is getting to the muscles via the blood stream because of insufficient water in the body.
• » Skin – If there is not enough water to feed the skin, it loses elasticity. Test by pulling the skin on the back of your hand, it should snap back instantly.
• » Eyes – Sunken eyes and dark skin around/under the eyes are a sign of severe dehydration.

Get Into a Life-Long Water Habit

Your aim is to drink water consistently throughout the day. Avoid drinking too much water at once, or too fast, because it will pass through you with little benefit to your body. For the first few days you may experience more frequent trips to the toilet, this is because your body isn’t used to being so well hydrated and needs time to adjust. You should also begin to notice a reduction in weight and centimetres, as your body’s water stores become redundant and gradually release their cargo!

TIP: If you don’t have a water cooler/dispenser at work, take a two litre bottle with you each day – it will also help you monitor your water intake. Water is your body’s life force, without it, you would literally dry up!

Water Retenion
Don’t overlook water retention… The less water you drink, the more the body will try to store water for later use. This will result in water retention as the body cells swell with their precious water stores, giving the appearance of ‘extra weight’

Take Action But Choose your Source Wisely

Some fluids work against hydration

COFFEE – TEA
Coffee and traditional teas contain caffeine, which produces increased urine output and is therefore a dehydrating agent. The more you drink, the quicker water will pass through your body.

DIET DRINKS
Diet drinks contain artificial sweeteners in place of sugar. These sweeteners send confusing messages to the brain that food (energy) is on the way to the stomach, but because sweeteners contain no calories, no energy arrives, so the brain sends out hunger messages until food finally arrives. People who drink diet sodas on a regular basis therefore tend to eat to much.

FRUIT JUICES
We generally think of fruit juices as being good for us, but in reality, they are sugar water. fruit is always far healthier when eaten in it’s whole, fibre and nutrient-rich form. if you do drink fruit juice, dilute 50/50 with water to reduce the sugar content. Beware of fruit cordials/squashes, which are usually sugar-saturated or contain artificial sweeteners – check the labels.
